US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Tuesday he has been encouraging countries with Patriot missile systems to donate them to Ukraine, which has appealed for more of the air defense batteries. “There are countries that have Patriots, and so what we’re doing is continuing to engage those countries,” Austin told a House Armed Services Committee hearing.
New Zealand’s first C-130J Super Hercules military transport aircraft has conducted its initial flight test in the US. The demonstration saw the vehicle fly for 246 minutes over Georgia and Alabama. It achieved a range of approximately 990 kilometers and an altitude of 3,200 meters. The demonstration followed the 18-month construction of the platform under American defense contractor Lockheed Martin.

General Atomics’ EagleEye multi-mode radar is being upgraded with the addition of an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) antenna and associated software. The drop-in antenna will more than double the radar’s range of 80 kilometers. “The increased range and optimized multi-mode performance of the radar are perfectly tailored to provide deep sensing capability in multi-domain operations,” General Atomics VP of Agile Mission Systems Jeff Hettick said.

The US Marine Corps has announced a Fusion Center at its base in Quantico, Virginia, aimed at streamlining the service’s capabilities acquisition process. Established a few months ago with little fanfare, the center will bring together officials from the service’s science, technology, requirements, and acquisition offices to help better align under-development technologies with the Marines’ requirements. Its initial focus will be on counter-drone technology following the extensive use of unmanned aerial vehicles in Ukraine and in the Middle East.

The US State Department has given the green light to a $250 million blanket order training sale to Saudi Arabia. The decision is aimed at bolstering the Kingdom’s defence readiness. The proposed sale includes various training and logistical support, primarily geared towards enhancing the Royal Saudi Naval Forces (RSNF). The timing of the decision comes amidst heightened tensions in the region, with ongoing conflicts and geopolitical rivalries shaping dynamics across the Middle East.

The first of eight Hangor II submarines for Pakistan was recently launched at the Wuchang Shipbuilding yard in Wuhan, China, though it’s uncertain what could be powering the boat given Germany’s block on an engine export. The initial Hangor II delivery timetable would have seen the four Chinese-built submarines delivered by 2023. But Germany had refused to approve export licenses for the MTU 396 diesel engine, which the submarine was designed to use.

Northrop Grumman won a $387.5 million definitized contract action for Global Hawk (RQ-4) aircraft sustainment. The contract provides for contractor logistics support services. The locations of performance are Sacheon Air Base, Republic of Korea; Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea; Misawa Air Base, Japan; Naval Air Station Sigonella, Italy; and San Diego, California; and is expected to be completed by April 30, 2025. This contract involves Foreign Military Sales to the Republic of Korea, Japan Ministry of Defense, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. This contract is a sole source acquisition. The Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, is the contracting activity.

The US Air Force recently conducted a training exercise focused on Independent Pilot Off-Station Procedures (IPOP) for the F-35 Lightning II aircraft. Held at Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, on April 1st, the exercise aimed to equip F-35 pilots with the skills necessary to operate in austere environments with limited support personnel. Pilots from the 422nd and 59th Test and Evaluation Squadrons (TES) participated in the IPOP training. The exercise curriculum included practicing basic maintenance procedures, such as post-flight inspections, and refueling techniques. By mastering these skills, F-35 pilots can potentially extend the operational range of their aircraft and improve mission flexibility, particularly when deployed to locations with limited ground crew support.
Raytheon won a $8,8 million deal for the procurement of 11 receiver mainframe assemblies in support of the E2D Advanced Hawkeye aircraft. The contract does not include options. All work will be performed in El Segundo, California. Work is expected to be completed by April 2027. Naval Supply Systems Command Weapon Systems Support, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the contracting activity.
Lockheed Martin Rotary and Mission Systems won a $102 million deal for capability package development and fielding, system integration and fielding, and in-service sustainment in support of current configurations of the AEGIS combat system. Work will be performed in Moorestown, New Jersey, and is expected to be completed by Dec. 31, 2024. Fiscal 2024 research, development, test and evaluation (Navy) funds in the amount of $24,803,348; fiscal 2020 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $6,183,214; fiscal 2024 operation and maintenance (Navy) funds in the amount of $2,029,852; fiscal 2023 research, development, test and evaluation (Navy) funds in the amount of $999,114; fiscal 2017 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $394,513 and fiscal 2019 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $9,546 will be obligated at time of award, and funds in the amount of $3,028,966 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, DC, is the contracting activity.
Raytheon Missiles & Defense won a $212.5 million for an option exercise of combat system engineering, miscellaneous material, and travel supporting combat system installation, integration, development, testing, correction, maintenance, and modernization of ZUMWALT class mission systems and mission system equipment. Work will be performed in Portsmouth, Rhode Island (40%); Tewksbury, Massachusetts (33%); San Diego, California (11%); Nashua, New Hampshire (9%); Pascagoula, Mississippi (6%); and Fort Wayne, Indiana (1%), and is expected to be completed by April 2025. Fiscal 2024 operations and maintenance (Navy) funds in the amount of $5,057,392 (37%); fiscal 2024 research, development, test and evaluation (Navy) funds in the amount of $3,600,000 (27%); fiscal 2024 other procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $ $2,796,988 (21%); fiscal 2023 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $1,010,627 (7%); fiscal 2024 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $801,601 (6%); fiscal 2023 other procurement (Navy) funds in the amount of $ $71,263 (1%); and fiscal 2020 shipbuilding and conversion (Navy) funds in the amount of $169 (1%), will be obligated at time of award, and $5,057,561 will expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This modification provides for the exercise of Ground/Air Task Oriented Radar (G/ATOR) full rate production Lot Six options to procure four full rate production G/ATOR systems and associated data and travel.
